1. Awards for All - Report

1.1        Project Overview

This project was undertaken to provide short tennis coaching and equipment at West End LTC.  The project benefited from an “Awards for All” grant.

Awards for All – Unique Reference Number: AA246594

1.2        End of Grant Report

The report addressed the following questions.

1.2.1      Please give details of the ways in which the grant has been of benefit to the work.

The provision of this grant has allowed us to purchase equipment and to run a short tennis programme.  This would not have been possible prior to this purchase.  In addition the equipment has been used at our millennium and centenary open day celebrations, at our weekly, Saturday morning coaching sessions for juniors.  It has also lead to the local authority considering asking the Club to provide short tennis programmes at two primary schools and at the Club next year and in years to come.

The short tennis programme was run at the Club from 8th May to 12th June over a period of six weeks.  This particular programme included 18 junior players and the Club gained four new members.  Dundee City Council is now in the process of considering asking West End to provide this activity on an annual basis.  We are also working with the local authority to introduce short tennis to two primary schools in the area and this will, it is hoped, lead to new members for the Club.  Harris Academy the local secondary school have approached the Club and may also be using the courts and the equipment next season, as they do not currently have tennis facilities of their own.

In addition the equipment was used at the Club's millennium and centenary open day celebrations when some 250 people came along and took part in various activities.  The equipment is also being used each week on a Saturday morning when we run junior coaching classes for beginners and improvers, although the main use is from the beginners.  The adults in the Club are also making use of the table tennis equipment over the winter months when the weather is not suitable for outdoor play.

1.2.2      Enter the number of people who benefited from the grant?

Around 150 people will have benefited from the grant

4. Original Questions

The original questions and answers are detailed as follows.

4.1        Q: Tell us why the grant is needed and describe what you want to do with the money.

Answer: "To introduce and improve tennis within the area - see attached details"

This grant is required to support the development of the West End Lawn Tennis Club (the Club) in a number of ways and to allow the Club to reach out to more potential participants in tennis playing and the activities of the Club.  The Club survives financially year to year but currently does not have the funds to invest in ways to make an impact on attracting new members.

The Club is active, supports a growing interest in tennis and over recent years has built up a number of activities, which support tennis and the local community.  This would, with the help of this grant, be taken a stage further and allow more people to enjoy the sport of tennis.  It will also allow the Club to be able to provide more of a base in which the local community can come together either as members of the Club or as visitors to the coaching programmes or social events such as the Club’s Open Day and Tournament Days.

The grant will allow the Club to carry on the following additional activities and offer improved and additional facilities on its existing site.

·   A short tennis programme with related equipment for juniors and others wishing to take part in tennis.  It is important to provide coaching for beginners, as they will ensure the Club’s future.

·   Enhanced winter and wet weather provision to support the additional coaching.

·   Enhanced Clubhouse provision to support the additional coaching and related Club facilities.

·   Enhanced environmental, safety and security provision at the Club to ensure the programme of activities can be maintained over a number of years.

4.2        Q: How many people will benefit from the grant?

Answer: Around 150 people will have benefited from the grant

4.3        Q: Who will benefit from the grant and in what way?

Answer: Mainly young children, the Club and families with the community

The young children in the community will benefit from the requested equipment and related activities.  This will include members and non-members of the Club.  The benefits include improving their levels of fitness through supervised sporting activities.  This is not intended to be an elitist tennis school, more a welcoming programme where children can take part in fun based sporting activities.

It is also expected that the facilities made possible with this grant assisted project will benefit the Club’s overall membership and efforts to welcome non-members who take advantage of other coaching and social activities organised by the Club.

In addition the parents of these children will benefit through coming along with the children and mixing with other parents and therefore forming peer support groups and mixing with others within the community.

4.4        Conditions of the Grant

·   We will use the grant for the purpose set out in the application.

·   We will not sell any equipment purchased with the grant.

·   We will acknowledge the grant in the annual at the AGM.

·   We will show the grant separately in the annual accounts.

·   If we do not spend the entire grant we will promptly return the unspent amount.

·   We will keep all financial records and accounts, including receipts for items purchased with the grant for at least two years and make these available on request.

7. Project Results Reported

As part of the conclusion of the process the Club submitted a report to the “Awards for All” funding body.  The unique reference number used was AA246594 and contained the following information

7.1        Details of Grant Benefits

The provision of this grant has allowed us to purchase equipment and to run a short tennis programme.  This would not have been possible prior to this purchase.  In addition the equipment has been used at our millennium and centenary open day celebrations, at our weekly, Saturday morning coaching sessions for juniors.  It has also lead to the local authority considering asking the Club to provide short tennis programmes at two primary schools and at the Club next year and in years to come.

8. Supporting Information

Currently at the West End Lawn Tennis Club in Dundee there is a reasonably healthy membership which is able to support a good playing squad standard.  The club participates in the Midland Counties of Scotland LTA leagues with three senior and two junior teams.  A number of the members have also been selected for regional coaching and one of the juniors has been selected for coaching with the Scotland squad at Largs.

The Club runs a number of coaching initiatives throughout the year to improve playing standards and to encourage children and adults into tennis.  An example of this are the junior coaching sessions which are run at the weekends and are open to members and non-members.  These are very popular and well attended.

The facilities of the Club include four all weather tennis courts which provide a good playing surface for all standards.  These courts were laid down some nine years ago through a loan from the Scottish LTA, which is being serviced from club subscriptions.

The West End LTC would benefit from an improved clubhouse, which is suitable for its needs.  The present clubhouse is over ninety years old and due to its wooden construction and the recent attacks of vandalism it has sustained is in need of replacement.  An aim of the Club is to provide a new clubhouse, for Club activities, committee meetings, hosting visiting teams and holding local tournaments.

8.1        Aims of WELTC

8.2        History

The West End Lawn Tennis Club is located at 101 Shaftesbury Road, Dundee.  The Club has been in existence for some 100 years.  Over that time it has acted as a centre for the playing and development of tennis in the west end of the city of Dundee.

From local records the WELTC has been in existence since 1900 when the address was listed as Westpark Road and the president at that time was Mr Hendry.  In 1902/3 the address then became Shaftesbury Road and the president was Mr Draffen.  There has been, over the years, a number of tennis milestones recorded at the West End Lawn Tennis Club.  One of significant note was past member, Joyce Hume (Barclay) who played with Winnie Shaw (Wooldridge) in the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 1982 and Anita Ellis who also reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon.  It has also been noted that in past years there have been national tournaments held at the Club and it has been known that up to 1500 spectators have supported such events.

8.3        Tennis Development

The main activity of the Club is tennis and over the playing season the Club offers a number of tennis opportunities, in a coaching, competitive or social environment.  Each of these approaches help towards improving the tennis playing standard at WELTC.  Even the social events help to encourage those who would not normally get involved with the sport to take up a racket and have a hit.  The Club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) through the Midlands Counties and the Scottish LTA.

One of the aims of WELTC is to improve the tennis activities to meet the needs of present and future members.  To do this the potential of the Club must be explored and an inventory of the resources developed including the facilities, members and finances.  With this and an understanding of the tennis needs of the current membership potential coaching schemes may be identified and marketed through the Club.  This should be done in partnership with local schools, universities and the local authority.

The WELTC tennis event calendar runs from April to October and starts with an “Open Day” which is normally held in May.  This year the event was supported by the LTA’s “Play Tennis” initiative.  This event is able to offer old and prospective members a chance to take part in coaching and fun tennis events as well as use the day to raise funds for the Club.  It is normal for the Club to organise two “American Tournaments” during the tennis season and these events are a mix of serious and social tennis along with a day out for the family and some fund raising activities.

The most serious tennis activity run internal to the Club are the Club Championships when the Club trophies which in some cases date back to 1903 are contested.  These Championships include competitions in the categories of junior boys and girls, singles, under 12 and under 18 as well as adult gents and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  The format for these is a knockout competition with the exception of the under 12 juniors which is a round robin format.  The conclusion of this activity is Finals Day, which is held in August, with a social and fund raising BBQ for all the family.

For many years the Club has supported a number of teams within the Midlands Counties of Scotland league structure with Junior, Gents and Ladies teams.  The teams have been more successful in previous years but there is every possibility to recapture this success in the coming seasons at Midlands and Scottish level.

8.4        Club Membership

At this time there are some 145 members of the Club.  This is made up of families, seniors and juniors with a mix of male and female members.  There is also a good spread of ages within the club with the youngest coaching pupil five years of age and the oldest player a lady in her eighties.  Should the development of WELTC be progressed to plan it is expected that this number would grow.  The appeal of the Club and its facilities are tennis but extends to social interaction both of which would benefit the local community.
